The Grosse Pointe Soccer Association Boys U-11 Salvo 97 F team finished the Fall 2007 season undefeated in league play and tied for first place in the Michigan Youth Soccer League Major Blue (second) Division. The team compiled an 8-0-2 record in league play and a 12-1-3 overall record including tournament play.

Co-Coach, Mike Azar, commented “these young boys gave tremendous effort all season and they earned their success. Every player was a significant contributor and an important part of the team. I could not be happier with the outcome of the season.” Coach Azar went on to say that most of the players on the team are not only outstanding soccer players but excellent athletes and young men. “One thing we realized several years ago is that these boys are talented athletes in several different sports and just needed the chance to play at a high level.”

The team’s success on the field was a culmination of several months of hard work and sacrifices. Peter Mogk, Manager and co-coach said “we started our practices in July with practices at 7:00am twice during the week and on Sunday evenings. We also had to work around our hockey and baseball players’ schedules. In fact, we played several games during the season with only one substitute on the sidelines which makes our season record even more remarkable.” Mogk went on to say “the core of this team has been together for several years now and Mike and I know we are fortunate to have not only great athletes to work with, but also a great parent group that is supportive of our program and dedicated in helping us develop their boys as soccer players.”

Azar pointed out that while the Salvo 97 F is a community based team that only plays in the fall, they were able to compete with and win against many of the state’s most competitive programs.

Breakers ‘98B Attend Liederkranz Soccer Classic
The Breakers ‘98B U-10 team trekked south to Mansfield, Ohio in search of hardware and did a great job representing the GPSA. Three of Northern Ohio's better teams lay in the way. The Breakers opened against the Jackson Fury and, after gaining a 2-1 lead, lost 3-2. The host team Liederkranz scored late to steal 2nd match, 2-1. Despite narrowly losing two nail biting games by 1 goal, the Breakers battled in their last game with Ashland on Sunday morning to the close the tournament with a 4-3 victory!

It was a great time for all and while the weather for the Adam Schuster Memorial Tournament is always questionable, we had a delightful Autumn weekend.

Breakers 96A Win National Indoor Regional Tournament

The GPSA Breakers 96A won The National Indoor Championship Regional Tournament this past weekend with a sudden death overtime goal by Leah Piepszowski.  Defense was the key in the final game as the Breakers and WAZA took a 0 – 0 tie into the overtime period.  The Breakers defense was anchored by goalie Olivia Withers, sweeper Francesca Ciaramitaro and defenders Leah Piepszowski, Kelsie Schwartz, Alexis Sorce and Christina Ridella.  Breaker mid-fielders Ellie Zak and Franny Weber controlled the pace of the game while helping fuel offensive strikers Danielle Manning, Paige Micks, Jena Paglino and Christina Firl to key goals through the tournament.  With the win, the Breakers qualify for the National Indoor Championship Tournament held in Cleveland, Ohio in early March 2007.

GPSA Breakers ‘93A Win Premier U14 Division Undefeated

The U-14 Breakers 93A team completed their season in Michigan Premier in a battle of undefeated teams on a rain-soaked and muddy Sunday afternoon. Their opponent, Troy’s TSC Wildcats, came into the game with 6 wins and a tie, allowing only 4 goals and scoring 16. The Breakers had 7 wins, allowing only 3 goals and scoring 20 in their season.

Both teams tested each other early, but footing quickly degenerated in the mud and scoring opportunities disappeared. The Breakers defense allowed only two quality scoring chances, both covered by keeper Joanna Manos. The Breakers had a number of chances, particularly off of set-pieces from Sarah Ventimiglia, but were unable to capitalize on them.  It was a wild and often physical game with lots of slipping and sliding, but it ended in a 0-0 tie with lots of dirty laundry. The tie was as good as a win for the Breakers, who won the division outright by a 2-point differential.  IT is likely the team will move up to the Premier 2 Division for the Sporing ’07 season.

Congratulations, Ladies! Well played!

The Breakers, under the direction of coach Dan Kelly, defeated Jackson United 3-0 in the championship game.  Ellen Muniga opened the scoring in the final game off a corner kick from Jillian Black.  Emma Brush sealed the victory with a pair of goals off of assists from Katherine Corden and Erika Kay.  Keeper Lauren Jacob posted her third shut-out of the tournament. The Breakers earned their trip to the championship game with an earlier tie against Jackson (1-1), and shut-out victories over the Gators (6-0), and the Gators FC (7-0).

The U14 Salvo team tied its first game of the Tournament 1-1 and went on to win the next two games with shut outs.  The semi-final was a nail-biter that ended in a 1-1 tie after 2 overtime periods, sending it to a 1v1 shoot-out, where the Salvo team scored their 1st 3 attempts.  Salvo goal keeper   Joel Carr saved the Livonia Meteors first 3 attempts, sending Salvo to the Finals against Detroit Diesel.  It was a heartbreaking loss in the final, but a great showing for the Salvo team taking second place among 12 teams in the tournament. The tournament were initial games for the team playing together and the debut with Jonathan Pickett as head coach.

Coach Dan Kelly took his Grosse Pointe Breakers U13 A team up to Midland in August, and they returned home with the championship hardware. Playing with only two subs, and a bruised and banged up line-up, the Breakers defeated the host club Midland Fusion Premier with a 2-1 victory in the championship game.

Clare Brennan and Megan Bergeron combined for the goals, while keeper Sarah "Squeaky" Eckert yielded only a single goal off a free kick. The Breakers and Eckert shut out their first three opponents. Somers Brush scored the lone goal in the first game against the Bay City Spirit. Game two saw the Breakers roll over the Oakland Football Club Dragons 6-0, with goals by Elle Wilson, Meg Bergeron and Somers Brush. The semi-final game pitted the Breakers against the Canton Celtics, with Elise Corden setting up Bergeron for the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.
